What Devil Between the Legs Is About
Mexico City. An elderly couple, Beatriz and her husband, live locked into each other. He insults her daily, is jealous of her, grinds her down with words; she does not leave, because she has come to take the humiliation for being wanted. Arturo Ripstein spends two and a half hours on this dependency and softens none of it. Shot in black and white, moving in long takes, it leaves no scene where a viewer can rest. Old age and sex are handled openly and coarsely. A hard film to sit through, made to be looked at rather than enjoyed.
