What The Virgin of Lust Is About
Veracruz in the 1940s. Nacho waits tables in a hotel café where Spanish Republican exiles sit and talk about killing Franco. He becomes fixated on Lola, who lives on opium and drink and is hopelessly in love with a masked wrestler. Lola does not want Nacho but keeps him close and humiliates him, and however far he is degraded he will not leave. Ripstein tells it in long unbroken takes, in a Veracruz built like a stage set. It runs past two and a half hours and is not easy watching.
