What La venganza de Don Mendo Is About
Don Mendo, Marquis of Cabra, climbs a tower to reach the chamber of his beloved Magdalena and is caught by her father, Don Nuño Manso de Jarama. To protect her name he says he came up not for love but to steal, and that lie gets him condemned to death; the Marquis of Moncada and his friends arrange his escape. Fernando Fernán Gómez adapted and directed it and played Don Mendo himself. The source is the play by Pedro Muñoz Seca, staged on 20 December 1918 at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid. Muñoz Seca’s text is considered a masterpiece of astracán: a parody of Spanish Golden Age theatre written in verse built on deliberately forced rhymes. What it mocks is the bad theatre of its own day, its convoluted plots, its cardboard Middle Ages and its invented archaic Castilian.
