Voyage to Nowhere

Spain in the fifties. The Iniesta-Galván family is a travelling theatre company, going from town to town with its plays. But nobody comes any more, because the villages have cinemas now. Carlos Galván is caught between giving the work up and keeping it going. One day a son from his years on the road turns up. The film gives all this through an old man's account of it, and as he tells his past he makes some of it larger than it was and some of it as though it never happened. Fernando Fernán Gómez directs the Spanish film; a hundred and thirty-four minutes, with José Sacristán as Carlos and Laura del Sol, Juan Diego and Gabino Diego in the cast. Fernán Gómez was actor, director and writer at once, and adapted this from his own novel. It was named best film at the Goyas in 1987.
