What Life Goes On Is About
Fernando Fernán Gómez shot this Spanish film in 1963, adapted from a novel by Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui and set in the Maravillas district of Madrid. Eloísa is a self-sacrificing wife and mother; her husband is a violent policeman; their son reads and prays all day to atone for the family's sins; their two daughters dream of money and hate each other. The film shows poverty and violence inside a home without softening either, and censorship stood in its way: it could not open for two years, appeared almost secretly in a Bilbao cinema in 1965 and was withdrawn soon after. Its only surviving print was found years later, and the film was restored and re-released in 2015.
