What Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl) Is About
Carol Dysinger's short documentary is about Skateistan, an organisation in Kabul where girls learn to read and write and also to skateboard. It began as a skate school in 2007; in a place where girls taking part in sport was not accepted, skateboarding was possible because it was not classified as one, and that gap opened a space for them. The film presents this detail not as a triumph but as an indication of how narrow the opening is. The camera stays mostly on the girls' faces and on the ramp; the passage from fear to courage is told through falling and getting up again. It won the Academy Award for best documentary short at the 92nd Academy Awards, along with best documentary short at Tribeca and the BAFTA for British short film. Dysinger described it as a love letter to the brave girls of the country. Who it's for: viewers interested in girls' education in Afghanistan and in the short documentary form. Who it's not for: anyone wanting comprehensive political analysis, or who will not keep in mind that the film predates the situation after 2021.
