What Lemebel Is About

The documentary takes up Pedro Lemebel. Lemebel was a Chilean writer and visual artist. He came out of a poor childhood. He began his art work under Pinochet. In those years the country was under military rule. The atmosphere was repressive and hostile to homosexuals. Lemebel stood against it openly. He made his performances in the street and in halls. His clothes and his language were deliberately provocative. He said the things nobody wanted to hear. He had started making a film about his own work. He kept at it through the last eight years of his life. But he died of cancer in 2015 without finishing it. Joanna Reposi gathered that footage into her own documentary. The ninety six minute film is a Chilean and Colombian coproduction finished in 2019.
