What Let Me Fall Is About
Baldvin Z’s 2018 Icelandic film moves between two periods. Magnea is fifteen when she meets Stella, whose entirely unbounded way of living pulls them both into drugs, with consequences that break their lives and the thing between them. Twelve years later their paths cross again and a reckoning becomes unavoidable. It draws on real accounts and on interviews with the families of addicts, including the mid-2000s Icelandic cases remembered as the lost girls, young women who slipped so far into drugs, homelessness and prostitution that they became untraceable. It premiered at the Toronto film festival, and Ólafur Arnalds wrote the score. Elín Hall plays Magnea.
