What Libel Is About
A Canadian pilot in London watches a television interview. The man on screen is a baronet named Sir Mark Loddon. The pilot thinks he knows him: they were in the same prison camp during the war, and this is not the real Loddon but an actor who closely resembled him. He takes the claim to the press. Loddon sues for libel. Anthony Asquith's British film is adapted from Edward Wooll's play. Almost all of it takes place in a courtroom. Dirk Bogarde plays two parts; Olivia de Havilland is the wife and Robert Morley the barrister. The real tension is not in the evidence but in the man's own memory: because of what he went through in the war, there are things he cannot recall.
