What Underground Is About
A working-class love story set in and around the London Underground of the 1920s. On the same day at the same station two men are drawn to the same woman: gentle Bill and brash Bert. She chooses Bill, but Bert is not built to take rejection, and from there the story moves somewhere dark. Anthony Asquith shot inside the Underground and in a power station, recording the London of the day, its crowds and its machinery, with remarkable attention. It is counted among the best works of British silent cinema. The British Film Institute restored it, rebuilding the film as first shown from a print held in Brussels together with two reels of original negative, and it returned to screens with an orchestral score written by Neil Brand.
