What Cottage to Let Is About
A cottage in Scotland has been turned into a hospital for the duration of the war, and inside it an inventor is working on a nearly finished bomb sight. Among the people arriving at the house are both Allied agents and German spies, and for a long time it is not clear who is which. Anthony Asquith made this spy thriller in 1941 while the war was on, and its tone is closer to play than to gravity. Alongside Alastair Sim, Leslie Banks and John Mills, a very young George Cole appears in one of his first films. The closed setting, the small cast and the suspicion that keeps moving from one person to another are what still make it watchable.
