What Shooting Stars Is About
The marriage and the careers of Mae Feather and Julian Gordon, a couple who act together, both crack when he discovers her affair with the comedian Andy Wilks. The real subject is less that triangle than the studio itself: the film watches westerns and slapstick being shot side by side on neighbouring stages, and pulls the whole floor together in a single celebrated crane shot. This was Anthony Asquith’s first film as a director, credited alongside A. V. Bramble, though history has increasingly assigned it to Asquith alone. Sources date the production to 1927, with the American release following in 1928. The BFI has since restored it.
