What Little Peach Is About
Anzukko is the daughter of a successful writer and turns down every suitor who comes to her. In the end she marries Ryokichi, who has just started writing. But the marriage soon comes to a dead end: his work does not go anywhere, his pride cannot bear it, and she has to deal with her husband’s failure and her father’s shadow at the same time. The film tells how a marriage rots from the inside in postwar Japan without building a single shouting scene. It was adapted from a novel. Kyoko Kagawa plays the lead in Mikio Naruse’s hundred and nine minute Japanese film, completed in 1958.
