What London After Midnight Is About
Balfour House has stood empty since its owner was found dead five years ago. When two strange tenants move in, the neighbours lose their peace: one of the men looks like a creature with pointed teeth, a tall hat and eyes forced wide open. Inspector Burke reopens the old death. Once night falls the house does not make clear who is really inside it. Tod Browning made this silent film with Lon Chaney, and because not a single copy of it survives today it is one of the most sought after lost titles in the history of cinema. The last known print burned in the 1965 fire at the MGM vault; only production stills are left. Chaney's own makeup is known from those photographs. Browning shot the same story again with sound in 1935.
