What Where East Is East Is About
In Southeast Asia a man who makes his living catching and selling wild animals lives with his daughter. Her fiancé is with them as well. Then the mother, who left them years before, comes back and begins drawing the daughter’s fiancé to herself. The balance in the house breaks, and this time the father has to deal not with animals but with his own family. The film carries the way American cinema of the twenties looked at distant places; it builds an exotic setting and always locates the danger outside. Lon Chaney and Lupe Velez appear in Tod Browning’s sixty five minute silent film, completed in 1929.
