What The Blackbird Is About
In the Limehouse district of London there is a criminal known as the Blackbird who stages daring robberies. Between crimes he puts on a disguise and becomes the Bishop, a kindly man who cannot walk and runs a rescue mission. Lon Chaney plays them both. The Blackbird falls for Fifi, a French music hall performer, but she inclines toward another thief, the well mannered West End Bertie. Tod Browning's silent film is typical of what the pair made together: disguise and feigned disability gathered into the same body. It was shot for MGM on a budget low for one of the studio's biggest stars.
