Silent Madden and his daughter Molly have stepped out of the San Francisco underworld thanks to the counsel of a wise man named Chang Lo. Black Mike Sylva, settling an old score, is determined to pin on Madden a crime he did not commit. Directed by Tod Browning and made as part of the run of Universal pictures built around Priscilla Dean, it counts as one of the first gangster films to work through psychology; as much as the plot, the film is about characters reckoning with their own choices. Lon Chaney plays two parts, Black Mike and Ah Wing. Ah Wing was the first Asian character Chaney played, and although the film is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown, giving Chinese roles to white actors was simply how the period worked. The record dates it 1921; sources count it as a 1920 film, going by the first screening on 26 December 1920.
