Love

In Oslo, Marianne, a urologist, and Tor, a nurse, stand in very different places on relationships and desire. Marianne tries to describe what she wants on dates; Tor attaches no explanation to the time he spends with men he meets on the ferry. The film crosses their paths and watches without judging. Dag Johan Haugerud wrote and directed. Andrea Braein Hovig plays Marianne, Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen plays Tor. It is part of the director's trilogy of Sex, Dreams and Love. The three films share a city and do not continue one another, but ask the same question from different places: does talking resolve a relationship. The film is nearly all dialogue. Scenes happen while walking, on the ferry and in hospital corridors, with the camera not intervening. What distinguishes it is the absence of moral judgement. Nobody corrects anybody and no choice is marked as wrong. It played in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Who it is for: viewers who like Scandinavian films built on conversation. Who it is not for: anyone looking for incident; the film runs deliberately level.
