In Jon García’s 2020 film, Ruben and Carlos become cellmates in a minimum-security prison. Ruben struggles with the rules of daily life inside and with working out where he sits in the institution’s hierarchy, and Carlos becomes first his guide and then his lover. Feelings develop between them that neither can easily say out loud. When one is released before the other, the question is left standing: was it a real attachment, or the need for human contact under conditions that allowed nothing else? The film does not answer it and does not make it easier. Ernesto Reyes plays Ruben and Jesse Tayeh plays Carlos.
