The Falls

Jon García's 2012 American independent film centres two young men raised in the Mormon church. RJ and Chris have followed the path the congregation expects: good grades, scouting, a suitable girlfriend. Now comes the mission, and the two are assigned as companions and start sharing a home. As they go door to door explaining doctrine an unexpected closeness forms between them, and it brings out what each has been hiding about himself. The film handles the conflict between faith and sexual identity through loss rather than angry critique; the church and their families are drawn not as enemies but as a world genuinely believed in. The small budget is visible everywhere, and the performances and pacing are uneven. Sequels followed. Who it's for: viewers who like queer independent film and stories about faith colliding with identity. Who it's not for: anyone wanting technical polish and a tight script.
