What Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town Is About
When the father wins a jingle writing contest the family sets off for New York. The city is foreign to them in every way, and that foreignness soon lands them in trouble: stolen money that has come into their hands goes missing, and they have already promised to deliver it to one of a gang. What follows is the practical sense of the countryside meeting the criminal order of the city. The film sets city refinement against rural plainness and mocks them both; the ridiculous position always comes out of the other side’s assumptions. It is one of the films in a series that ran for many years. Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride appear in Charles Lamont’s seventy nine minute American film, completed in 1950.
