What Ma and Pa Kettle Is About
The Kettles and their fifteen children are about to be evicted from a collapsing farmhouse when Pa wins first prize in a tobacco slogan contest and lands them a modern house that does everything by itself. Their neighbour Birdie Hicks cannot stomach the sudden wealth and accuses him of stealing the slogan; the reporter Kim Parker gets to the bottom of it. The characters come out of Betty MacDonald’s 1945 novel The Egg and I; they were supporting figures in its 1947 screen version and audiences liked them so much that they were given a film of their own. Charles Lamont directed, Leonard Goldstein produced and Universal released it. This is the first of a nine-film series in which Marjorie Main played Ma every time and Percy Kilbride played Pa in seven.
