What Magical Mystery or: The Return of Karl Schmidt Is About
Karl Schmidt was once a rising name in the Berlin music scene. Since the breakdown he had five years ago he has been living in supervised accommodation in Hamburg. His old friends, the ones who founded a techno label called BummBumm Records, are going on a tour of Germany and offer him the job of driver. The reason is simple: Karl is the only one of them who will not be drinking. He takes it and gets behind the wheel of the van. Arne Feldhusen adapted the film from Sven Regener's novel, with Charly Hübner as Karl and Detlev Buck in the cast. It tells the German techno boom of the 1990s through its mess rather than through nostalgia. Its hero is a man nobody takes seriously, trying to put his own life back together.
