What Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles Is About
The documentary compresses Orson Welles's seventy years into ninety-two minutes: going on stage at sixteen, the Mercury Theatre years, the 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast, Citizen Kane at twenty-five. What comes after is more complicated: fights with studios, films cut by others, projects never finished, and long years in Europe. Chuck Workman's film moves through archive footage and people talking; Simon Callow, Norman Lloyd, Julie Taymor and Welles's daughter Christopher are among them. The documentary stands close to the story Welles told about himself: that Hollywood blocked him and the genius was wasted. Biographers such as Callow have argued with that account for years, saying Welles's own decisions and his habit of walking away from projects had a share in it. Both sides are heard in the film, but the weight stays with the legend.
