What Manhunt in the City Is About
A stray bullet fired during a Milan bank robbery kills a small girl, and her father goes looking for the men who fired it because the police get nowhere. What he finds instead is how much crime and quiet corruption sits just beneath the surface of the city. Umberto Lenzi shot this in 1975, at the height of the Italian crime cycle, and he refuses to make the search heroic: the father is beaten, isolated, and steadily pushed toward a group of citizens who have given up on the law and answer it with methods of their own. By the time he reaches them, the line between victim and aggressor has stopped being clear.
