What March on the River Drina Is About
In the first months of the First World War, Austro Hungarian troops cross the river Drina and enter Serbia. A Serbian artillery battery sets out on a forced march towards Mount Cer in western Serbia to meet them. The film covers that march and the battle of Cer that followed, a battle counted as the first Allied victory over the Central Powers in the war. The account shows exhaustion, hunger and the waiting at the gun positions rather than scenes of heroism. Mitrovic wrote the screenplay together with Arsen Diklic, and the film took the prizes for best film and best director at the Pula festival. Ljuba Tadic appears in Zika Mitrovic’s hundred and seven minute Yugoslav film, completed in 1964.
