The Republic of Užice

The year is 1941 and Yugoslavia is under occupation. German tanks forced the royal army to capitulate a few months earlier. An organised resistance begins in the country. It turns before long into a mass uprising. The communist party leads the partisans. They manage to drive the Germans out of a large territory. The liberated land comes to be called the Republic of Užice. There they set up an order of their own. There is not one single resistance in the country, though. Forces loyal to the king are armed as well. What they have in mind is not what the partisans have in mind. The tension between the two sides grows. While the war against the occupier goes on, they also settle accounts with each other. The film tells of that short lived republic. Boris Buzančić and Božidarka Frajt appear in the hundred and seventy minute film, a Yugoslav production Žika Mitrović finished in 1974.
