Meyaadha Maan

Rathna Kumar's 2017 Tamil film follows a young man who attempts suicide over the woman he loves. His friend goes to talk to her in order to dissuade him, and that meeting unexpectedly becomes the start of another relationship. The film uses the romantic comedy form while building its view from the friend's side. The narrative does not endorse obsessive love; it shows the first young man's behaviour as a problem and leaves room for the woman's own decision. Vaibhav leads with Priya Bhavani Shankar opposite him. The tone is light, the dialogue dense and the music foregrounded. The cast is largely made up of performers newly known at the time. Who it's for: those who like Tamil romantic comedy. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with a suicide attempt used as a comic premise; the film does this at the opening.
