What Michael H. - Profession: Director Is About
A documentary looking across more than twenty five years of Michael Haneke's career. Yves Montmayeur sets footage from the sets beside interviews; Haneke speaks himself, and so do the people he has worked with: Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche, Emmanuelle Riva, Jean-Louis Trintignant. The best passages are the ones that show how he works on a set, a method that has a single movement repeated over and over and leaves nothing to chance. This is a portrait rather than a critical film. It does not seriously take up the objections that have been made to Haneke's work, but for anyone curious about how he works it is a direct source.
