What Midwives Is About
After five years of training, Louise and Sofia start work as midwives, in what they were told is the most beautiful job in the world. What they meet is the daily condition of an underfunded health system: a relentless pace, birth, motherhood and, at times, death. Both take on enormous responsibility immediately, and the question becomes whether a vocation can survive a storm like this one. Léa Fehner’s film is fiction, but it came directly out of the testimony of midwives, who took part in the production. It had its world premiere at the Berlinale on 19 February 2023 and opened in France on 30 August that year.
