What Million Dollar Mermaid Is About
Put into the water as a child to help her walk again after polio, Annette Kellerman becomes famous as an Australian swimmer and performs in London and in America. Her one-piece bathing suit gets her accused of indecency and the affair turns into a full scandal. Kellerman does not back away from what she is doing. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, the film tells a real life story in the shape of a studio musical. Busby Berkeley is behind the water numbers; the pool choreography is the showiest part of the picture and, given the technical limits of the time, still impressive. Esther Williams, herself a competitive swimmer, plays Kellerman. The real Kellerman visited the set during filming and met Williams.
