Moebius

A woman tries to castrate her unfaithful husband, fails, and does it to their son instead. The rest of the film is the father's derangement about restoring his son's sexuality and the family disintegrating underneath it. Kim Ki-duk directed. There is not a single line of dialogue, no subtitles and no intertitles. The characters communicate in vocables and long stares. Getting it into Korean cinemas was not simple. It was submitted to the ratings board three times. The first two attempts drew a restricted classification, which in Korea is effectively a ban since no theatre operates under it. Kim cut 21 scenes, then 12 more, and only then received a youth-not-allowed rating. It screened out of competition at the 70th Venice Film Festival on 3 October 2013, two days before its Korean release. Its standing changed in 2017, when sexual assault allegations concerning an unnamed actress during the shoot were raised against Kim Ki-duk. Who it is for: almost nobody. Who it is not for: in practice everybody. This is a warning rather than a recommendation. The film depicts incest, self-mutilation and sexual violence directly, and the allegations against its director put it in a category of its own.
