Breath

Yeon, a housewife who has learned her husband is unfaithful, is depressed. She sees Jin, a death row inmate who has attempted suicide repeatedly, on the news and decides to visit him. She does not know him at all, and still makes his survival her own business. Kim Ki-duk wrote and directed; it is his fourteenth feature. It opened in Korea on 26 April 2007 and runs 84 minutes. The casting is interesting: the Taiwanese actor Chang Chen plays Jin, Park Ji-a plays Yeon and Ha Jung-woo plays her husband. The prison warden is played by the director himself. It competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, where the prize went to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 60 percent from ten critics. It grossed around 625,000 dollars internationally. Who it is for: viewers who like Kim Ki-duk's sparse, symbol-driven cinema. Who it is not for: anyone looking for motivation behind what the characters do. The film never explains why Yeon picks this man. The 2017 sexual assault allegations against the director are also on the table when weighing it.
