What Monica and Friends: Lessons Is About
Mauricio de Sousa's comic strip children have been fixtures of Brazilian newsstands since the 1960s, and this is the second time they have been handed to flesh and blood actors. Daniel Rezende directs, following his 2019 film Bonds, and the plot turns on a mistake made at school and the consequences the four have to live with. Rezende came up as an editor and earned an Oscar nomination for cutting City of God, which shows in how briskly this moves between gags and guilt. Its release was pushed back three times by the pandemic before it finally opened in December 2021. Who it is for: families who grew up with the strips and want to see them move. Who it is not for: viewers with no prior attachment, because the film assumes you already love these kids.
