What Sherina's Adventure 2 Is About
Riri Riza's 2023 Indonesian film is the sequel, made twenty-three years later, to the children's musical of 2000. Sherina is now a journalist and Sadam a traveller; the two meet again on an orangutan conservation project in the forests of Borneo. What is clever is that rather than leaning on nostalgia for the first film it genuinely ages its characters: as a childhood friendship becomes an adult relationship, the distance between them is also shown. The line about trafficking in the forest adds an environmental dimension. The songs are less memorable than the first film's. It runs long and the middle section loosens. Who it's for: viewers who saw the first film and like Indonesian family cinema. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series, or wanting a fast pace.
