Two Blue Hearts

Gina S. Noer's 2024 Indonesian film is the sequel to Dua Garis Biru from 2019. Reunited after years apart, a young couple face the difficulty of raising their four-year-old son together. Having taken on teenage pregnancy in the first film, Noer asks here what comes next: what two people who became parents very young do to their child while still building their own lives. The film is honest in refusing to present parenthood as a reward for maturity; Bima and Dara are still young, still unprepared, and the child pays for it. It is one of the few Indonesian films to discuss sex education and young parenthood this openly. The narrative weakness is a second half where the conflict repeats. Who it's for: viewers interested in Indonesian cinema and realist drama about young parenthood. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the first film and will miss the context, or who will find the constantly high domestic tension wearing.
