What Mori, The Artist's Habitat Is About
The garden of the painter Morikazu is thick with growth, and the insects, cats and other creatures living in it are the models for his pictures. We follow a single day in the life of a man who for more than thirty years has barely left his house while watching that garden, and of the people who love him; the film is not looking for a big event, it holds one summer day. Shuichi Okita’s ninety nine minute Japanese film was built around the painter Morikazu Kumagai, who kept working until he died at ninety seven. Tsutomu Yamazaki and Kirin Kiki play the husband and wife, acting together for the first time despite knowing each other for more than fifty years, and it opened on 19 May 2018.
