What The Chef of South Polar Is About

Nishimura is posted to the Japanese base in Antarctica as its cook. There are eight men there; the nearest settlement is fourteen thousand kilometres away, it is fifty below outside, and there are not even any penguins. There is very little work to do and nothing left to talk about. What remains is the food. What Nishimura cooks three times a day becomes the only thing holding eight men's days together. Shuichi Okita adapted the film from the memoir of an actual cook, with Masato Sakai as Nishimura. There is no heroism, no discovery and no danger; there is cooking, and there are men putting up with each other. It tells loneliness in a comic register.
