What Mountains of the Moon Is About

Richard Burton and John Speke travel into East Africa to find the source of the Nile. The journey runs on illness, wounds and their dependence on each other. On their return Speke declares a lake to be the source, Burton disputes it, and the friendship comes apart in public. The ending comes from the historical record: on the eve of the day the two were to debate publicly, Speke died in a shooting accident, and whether it was an accident is still argued. Bob Rafelson looks at imperial exploration more critically than most, though the African characters still stay in the background.
