My Daughter's Killer

Antoine Tassin's 2022 documentary follows the nearly thirty-year campaign of a French father, André Bamberski. His daughter Kalinka was found dead in 1982 in Germany, at the home of her mother's new husband. The man was a respected doctor and the German authorities closed the investigation; Bamberski, working from inconsistencies in the autopsy report, began his own. The case he pursued in France advanced, but the accused was never extradited. Decades later Bamberski organised having the man brought forcibly into France, and was prosecuted himself for it. The film is about how a gap between two legal systems left a family with nothing, and about the point at which the search for justice steps outside the law. The account rests largely on the father's own testimony. Who it's for: viewers who follow legal system documentaries and questions of cross-border law. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach a story around a child's death and allegations of sexual assault.
