What My Learned Friend Is About
William Fitch, an incompetent barrister, learns that a man he helped send to prison years ago has escaped and has put him on a list of people to kill. As the names on the list die one after another, Fitch and his colleague Claude try both to find the man and to stop his own turn from coming. The chase runs from an asylum to a courtroom and on to the face of Big Ben. The distance between death and a joke keeps shortening through the film. The seventy four minute British comedy by Will Hay and Basil Dearden is remembered for its black humour and is Hay’s last film; it was completed in 1943.
