My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Rainbow Rocks

An animated film set at a high school. Canterlot High is holding a battle of the bands. Groups will perform. Three new students arrive. Adagio, Aria and Sonata have a band. They are called the Dazzlings. None of them is an ordinary student. They are former sirens; with their voices they set people against each other. They were banished from another world long ago. They sing. Fighting starts at the school. The students turn on each other and nobody understands why. From there the film is a story of preparation. Five friends form a band. They rehearse and something is not working. There is tension between them. The newest member treated them badly in the past. Sunset Shimmer has changed sides. But nobody trusts her and she does not trust herself. They call someone. Twilight comes through a portal. What the narrative is interested in is not music but forgiveness: its idea is that the band accepting Sunset is not a formality but the condition of winning. The competition goes on. Each round is an elimination. The sirens grow stronger after every performance. The final is a duel. Two bands play at once. The songs are a mechanism inside the narrative. Each piece resolves a section. The animation is two-dimensional and keeps the look of the series. The structure is a series film. It follows the first and that one has to be known. This instalment is counted among the best liked of the series; the reason is the music. Jayson Thiessen directed. Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman and Rebecca Shoichet are in the voice cast. Who it is for: children who follow the series and anyone who likes musical animation. Who it is not for: anyone who does not know it; no character is introduced and past events are constantly referred to.
