What My Sister Eileen Is About
The Sherwood sisters, Ruth and Eileen, move from Ohio to New York. Ruth wants to write, Eileen wants the stage. They end up in a grim basement apartment in Greenwich Village that odd characters wander in and out of all day. A magazine editor, Bob Baker, takes a personal interest in the career plans of both of them. The film comes from the 1940 Broadway play, which itself came out of the autobiographical pieces Ruth McKenney wrote for The New Yorker. Rosalind Russell, playing Ruth, got her first Oscar nomination for it; the award that year went to Greer Garson for Mrs. Miniver. Alexander Hall directed, for Columbia.
