What There's Always a Woman Is About

Bill Reardon, an investigator in the district attorney’s office, quits to open his own detective agency, then gives up when no work comes and decides to go back to his old job. His wife Sally happens to be closing the office when a wealthy woman walks in wanting to know whether her husband is involved with a former girlfriend, and Sally presents herself as the detective and takes the case. When the client’s husband is found murdered, she sets about investigating it herself. Bill has been assigned the same murder by the DA and has no idea his wife is on it. Alexander Hall’s Columbia production is a screwball comedy built on the model of the Thin Man pictures, with Joan Blondell as Sally and Melvyn Douglas as Bill. Columbia saw a series in it and made a second film the same year, though Virginia Bruce played Sally that time.
