Naked Alibi

Al Willis is a baker, a quiet man with a family. One night he is brought into the station drunk, beaten during questioning, and on his way out he threatens the men who beat him. The next night one of the officers is killed. Chief Conroy knows who his only suspect is. There is no evidence, and Conroy will not let it go; he pursues it so far that he is dismissed from the force. Willis runs to a town on the Mexican border. Conroy goes after him without a badge. Jerry Hopper directs; eighty-six minutes, with Sterling Hayden as Conroy, Gloria Grahame as Marianna, a singer in the town, and Gene Barry as Willis. The film takes a long time to say which of them is right; the policeman's obsession and the suspect's guilt carry the same weight.
