What Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV Is About
Amanda Kim's 2023 documentary is about the artist Nam June Paik. He was born in Korea, left with his family during the war, studied music in Germany and became one of the first artists to use television as material. The documentary uses Paik's own writing, read by Steven Yeun. The narrative brings forward his early guesses about how networks would change the world and sets them against the present. The archive is wide: performances, distorted television images and figures from the Fluxus circle. The documentary also shows the periods when his work did not sell. Who it's for: those interested in contemporary art and the history of video art. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the art to be explained; the documentary lets the works speak.
