What Nanking Is About

At the end of 1937 the Japanese army entered Nanjing, then the Chinese capital, and weeks of massacre followed. A handful of Westerners who stayed in the city, missionaries, doctors and businessmen, declared a safety zone and took in tens of thousands of civilians. The documentary is built from their letters and diaries, read by actors, alongside the testimony of survivors and of Japanese soldiers who were there, and archive footage. Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman's film screened at Sundance and drew on Iris Chang's book. The death toll is still argued over: the Tokyo tribunal's estimate was around two hundred thousand, China's official figure is three hundred thousand, and some researchers give lower numbers.
