What Rule Breakers Is About

Bill Guttentag's 2025 film is based on a true story: the all-girl robotics team known as the Afghan Dreamers and Roya Mahboob, the woman who started it. In a setting where the schooling of girls is itself contested, they learn to write code and build robots and enter international competitions in 2017. The attention of the world press brings support and threats in equal measure. Nikohl Boosheri plays Roya, and Elaha Mahboob is among the writers. Some critics have questioned how the film frames Afghanistan and the American presence there. The story it tells and that framing deserve to be weighed separately.
