National Theatre Live: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

The film shows a stage production. The play is by Tom Stoppard. The stage is the Old Vic in London. David Leveaux directed it. The production was made for the play’s fiftieth year. It ran from 25 February to 6 May 2017. The broadcast to cinemas was on 20 April 2017. The play takes place against the background of Hamlet. Two minor characters are at its centre. They are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In Shakespeare they appear in a few scenes. Here they are at the middle of the stage. They wander in and out of the action and struggle to follow what is happening. The further their own version of the story goes, the further out of their depth they get. Daniel Radcliffe plays Rosencrantz and Joshua McGuire plays Guildenstern. David Haig also appears in the hundred and sixty nine minute film, a British production Tim Van Someren finished in 2017.
