What National Theatre Live: The Importance of Being Earnest Is About
Max Webster's 2025 staging presents Oscar Wilde's 1895 play as a National Theatre Live recording. Jack plays the responsible guardian in the country and amuses himself in town under a false identity; his friend Algy runs a similar game, and the two lies collapse at once. Webster's reading foregrounds the playfulness of the text: the costumes are extravagant, the rhythm fast and the performers make direct contact with the audience. Ncuti Gatwa's Algy is particularly energetic. The games of identity already in Wilde's text are read more openly in this staging. Watched as a recording, some of the room's energy is lost and certain stage jokes do not carry on camera. Who it's for: viewers who like recorded theatre and Oscar Wilde. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a film adaptation, or who will find the recorded-stage form limiting.
